MAINSAILS

SPEED:   The Haarstick design philosophy produces a fast main that trims easily and predictably. A sail that will respond to the available trimming tools throughout the full wind range is our top priority. This goal is realized via a design program that fully optimizes every seam curve, luff curve, foot curve and roach offset - right down to infinitesimal fabric stretch corrections offsetting sail deformation that occurs in the design wind range. This makes for a sail that is as fast in 5 knots as it is in 25 knots!

DURABILITY:   To make the best sails, you have to use the best sailcloth. The only way to be absolutely sure that you are using the best fabrics is to subject them to the most thorough cloth testing procedures in the sailmaking business. The Haarstick fabric research program has generated the largest library of fabric data in the industry. No loft knows sailcloth like Haarstick. No loft tests sailcloth like Haarstick. This benefits every sail we make - race or cruise. The same attention to fabric quality, panel engineering, construction and finishing details assures you the finest mainsail available. Combine our renowned expertise in sail engineering with sailmaking's best CAD/CAM program and the result is a fast, durable sail for whatever type of boat you have.

VALUE:   We encourage you to compare us to the competition. No other sail is engineered like a Haarstick sail. No other sail is built with as much attention to detail as a Haarstick sail. Check out our race record. Our customers have won more than their fair share of silverware. Fast shapes, exhaustive fabric testing, engineering excellence, strong customer service and attractive prices mean genuine value. Only Haarstick can consistently deliver this level of quality, better systems mean better products for you. The next time you're considering a new mainsail, call Haarstick!

All Haarstick Mainsails are computer-cut and include computer

generated corner reinforcements, load analyzed seam construction,

luff and foot attachment to fit the spar systems, 100% Stainless

Steel rings and reinforced stress points.

Mainsail Types

(1) CROSS-CUT MAINSAILS:

Still the Durability standard in the industry. The Cross-Cut Main utilizes High Modulus fill oriented Dacrons in 3 finish types:

The Cross-Cut Mainsail is our base model, but is designed and engineered as a Haarstick!

Fully Battened Cross-Cut Race Main - Tek 35

(2) Split-Weight Mainsails:

In many One Design classes, we are able to combine VF and YT cloths to make the Split-Weight Main.  The VF in the luff allows the material to respond to shaping controls, while the YT in the Leech creates a super stiff, super flat exit for clean airflow.  Only Haarstick takes the extra time to engineer, design, CAD/CAM, computer cut, and assemble a Split-Weight main. These mainsails are extremely durable and very fast.  Our Split-Weight mains power many top boats in One Design and Offshore Class racing (see J/24, Ensign, Sonar, Lightning, Pearson 26, C&C 29 & C&C 35-3 sails). Depending on the Class Rules, SW mains can be combined with some or all Full Length Battens for increased durability.

(3) TRI-RADIAL QUILT CUT MAINSAILS:

The Tri-Radial Quilt Cut is the ultimate construction method for use with today's Hi-Tech sail fabrics. Want proof? Look around the race course. It seems all the others are starting to look more and more like Quilt-cuts! Why buy a copy when you can own the original!

A Basic Quilt-Cut Tri-radial Mainsail with Radial Rectangle Head & Clew sections. This Grand Prix Kevlar Eight Meter Mainsail powered Golden Feather to the 1999 Eight Meter World Championship. Very Smooth &  Very Fast !  It demonstrates the smooth distribution of draft that is typical of a Haarstick Mainsail.  Race or Cruise, Tri-Radial or Cross-Cut, our design programs and our attention to detail produce mainsails that are fast, easy to trim and extremely durable. This Freedom 40/40 OFFSHORE Kevlar Tri-Radial Cruise Main
shows the "Monster Roach" or Fathead design possible on Freedom Yachts free standing Carbon Fiber rigs. With our engineering expertise and the latest in High Tech Sailcloth, we offer the best designed, most durable performance Freedom mainsails available anywhere for any price!

STANDARD FEATURES

All Haarstick RACING mains include:

All Haarstick CRUISING mains include:

OPTIONS

Reefing -- Virtually all mains should be fitted with at least one reef. If you are considering any extended cruises or passages we recommend two or possibly three reefs. Consult your Haarstick sailmaker on some of the different sail-handling systems on the market.

Flattening Reef -- This trimming aid is placed 12" - 18" above the clew and is used to remove excess fullness from the foot and lower portion of the mainsail. Recommended on sails built using Wedge Foot and/or Lens (Shelf) Foot construction.

Cunningham (Standard with racing mains.) -- Placed 10" - 18" above the tack, the cunningham is used in lieu of adjusting the halyard for controlling fore/aft draft placement.

Lens Foot -- Also referred to as a "Shelf Foot", this is a panel added to the Wedge Footed mainsail to allow additional fullness to the foot of the sail. This option requires a powerful outhaul that is adjusted easily to assure proper flattening for upwind sailing.

Draft Stripes (Standard with racing mains) -- Stripes of contrasting color (black, blue, red or green) placed on the sail parallel to the water to aid in illustrating the sail shape for more accurate trim adjustment.

Full Battens -- Full battens or a combination of extended length and full length battens can be a great addition to your new mainsail. Prolonged life, stable sail shape, larger roach, all add up to a big plus! Discuss the options and alternatives with your Haarstick sailmaker.

BattSlides(TM)1 -- Schaefer BattSlides are recommended on fully-battened mains on boats 40' LOA & larger. This device provides a multi-axis, fully articulating sail-slide/spar attachment at the batten's inboard end addressing the stress related problems placed upon sail hardware used in conjunction with full battens. BattSlides work with your existing mast groove whether Flat or round.  With the seasonal application of a spar lubricant like Harken McLube(TM)2 these can rival the ease of some expensive external track mast flaking systems.

Ultra-Bond(TM)3 -- Glued seam construction is recommended on all our laminate sails.  For mainsails on boats under 40 feet, we glue the primary load bearing seams and sew the radial seams. On larger mains, we glue all the seams. Ultra-Bond results in a seam that is stronger than the fabric allowing absolutely zero seam slip at the highest loads.

Sail Handling Systems -- "Lazy Jacks", The Dutchman(TM)4, reefing and "single line" reefing kits, in-mast and in-boom furling systems are some of the sail handling systems available. All are designed to make your sailing more enjoyable. Your Haarstick sailmaker can discuss these options with you and provide you with specific product information.
