J29 Genoa

Doug, I have been very happy with the sail - it's the best one that was ever built for my boat. Last year we finished 1st overall in one race at Sail Oswego (Harborfest) and that was due to our upwind speed with the new genoa. This sail has more drive than I've experienced with prior sails and it's the first time I've had a "deck sweeper". Also got a lot out of the printed tutorial that came with the sail not to mention the after service service when I had some questions and also needed a different sail bag. My next sail will be a Haarstick, that's for sure.

New Sail Purchase

Steve, I thought you might like an update on the two sails I purchased in the Spring of 2004. They were a Carbon, 153%, Lt/AP,#1 Genoa and a 180%,.75 cloth, triradial spinnaker. Whenever we used them in the 2004 season we did well. This year the breeze has been light to medium in just about all our races , consequently we have used these sails in every race. They are both still freakin' fast! I'm glad we don't have to race against them.

New Sail Purchase

Hi Doug,
Well we broke out the arsenal for the Regatta. No one knew about the sails because we kept it quiet and got it on board the boat at night. Needless to say, all eyes were on us. The reinforcements are perfect, the sails are absolutely beautiful and set well. Much to the annoyance of the boat that usually cleans up, our results for the Cruiser Championship Trophy were 1-1-1-1-2-2. Thanks for making me look good.

before new suit purchase

Doug,
I am the relatively new owner of the 22 that made the voyage (to Jamaica). After two years, the sails are still together. Understand that I sail in 30-35 knots in Kingston Harbour. Needless to say, the entire (other sailmaker) fraternity in Montego Bay has seen the "light" and now want Haarstick. I swear by them when I see the others separate at the seems. Now it's time to go again, so I am one of those in the group from Jamaica who will be carrying the Haarstick flag high, for another season.

Thank you for all of your guidance and assistance during the Oneida Lake Sailing Club Commodore's Cup last Saturday. You were able to coach me on the proper use of my new Haarstick racing sails. This led to two first place finishes during the heavy air day. The mainsail and the 153% RF Genoa were the keys to great performance for my J/28, Mystique. Your light air pointers and the Haarstick Mylar/Pentex 153% enabled me to obtain a third and a first in light and variable winds on Sunday. Overall, we finished first PHRF in the A Fleet with three first place finishes.

My investment in Haarstick sails paid great dividends thanks to your support. This is our first Commodore's Cup A Fleet Championship in many years of competition.

Your service after the sale is outstanding!

Sincerely,

Jim F. Zinkovitch, Sr.

Dear Doug- The addition of the 20 sets of Haarstick sails for our 420's has really pushed our program in high gear. We have 20 boats, but we had 10 boats with one make of sails and 10 with another make. Now all of the boats are even and this allows us to host major high school and jr. sailing events. They are very durable which is a major benefit dealing with kids and we are hoping to get double the life expectancy out of these sets than other sailmakers that we have gone with in the past.

J/35

Steve,
I thought I should let you know that our J/35 TOP GUN finished first in the LORC (Lake Ontario Racing Council) series. LORC is a Toronto based open regatta format that this year included 27 races over seven weekends. The J/35 fleet has grown dramatically in the Toronto area this year with 10 boats regularly turning out for the regattas. TOP GUN'S consistent performance paved the way to it's overall win this year. The Haarstick powered TOP GUN has had all her sails built at the Haarstick loft in Hamilton (Baysails Haarstick), being started by Hank Nyhoff, and now run by Keven Piper. The support of the crew and Keven Piper our sailmaker made for a banner year for our boat. TOP GUN'S inventory is as follows;

2001 G.P. 155% "Amber" Kevlar Lt #1 Genoa
2001 G.P. AIRX Nylon Maxi-Runner
2000 G.P. Kevlar Tri-Radial Mainsail
1998 G.P. 155% Kevlar Lt/AP #1
1998 G.P. 148% Kevlar Hvy #1
1998 G.P. 100% Kevlar Blade #3
1998 Regatta Nylon A.P. Spinnaker

Thank to all of your Haarstick team that helped make our boat #1 this year.

Yours truly,

Russ Perry, Skipper/Owner
J/35 TOP GUN and District Governor Fleet 8 J/35 Association

J/24

The crew of Brain Cramp has been together for the past six years, with brief changes in the crew line up. Over the past three years, we have gone through major changes. In 1997, Greg Eiffert took a sabbatical from our program and we picked up Mike Ingham to drive the boat. With Mike came a shift from Haarstick to (another sailmaker). The year we spent using (the other sailmaker’s) sails became a critical component in the growth of our program. Mike insisted on these sails to give us a known quantity and put us on a level playing field with the best sailors in the class. We learned that our position in the fleet didn’t change with the change of sails and, in fact, we were going slower downwind. The problems we had always had with heavy air were still a problem. We also went through more sets of sails that season then ever before. We gained a new respect for and confidence in the Haarstick Sails that we had used. After a disastrous finish in the ’97 Worlds in Argentina, Mike left the J-24 for an Olympic campaign in Tornado’s and Greg came back onboard. Since then, we have been sailing with Haarstick Sails. Last year, we had a breakthough and figured out our heavy air speed problems with a 3rd at the North American’s. We had a great season last year. In addition to our performance at the North American’s, we won the Great Lakes, our district championships and the Changing of the Colors. While the ’99 season has taken a few regattas to get on track we are now on a role with a second at the North American’s. We also look forward to CORK in Kingston, Ontario at the end of August and the World’s in Genoa, Italy, in October.

Express 30

37 years!!!

Steve - I just wanted to thank you for the great sails and service that you have given us for the last 37 years!!

Your team is excellent, everyone knows boats and sails. Besides your self you have always had good sailors at the loft to work with. I think a list of people that you have worked with at Haarstick's and what they have won would be pretty impressive. Recently Doug told me that our customer file is one of the thickest ones he has.

I purchased my first suit of sails for a 505 in the winter of '70-71 when your loft was in Ithaca above Mcpherson's. I still remember you getting out on the trapeze to check out the main. Through the years your sails went on our Interclub and two PHRF boats, a Viking 28 and now Vitesse, an Express 30, which we still actively race. Some of our racing highpoints have been multiple wins in the Scotch Bonnet Light Race, a win at CORK, and then just last year a division first in the LOR300 double handed spinnaker fleet and a first overall in the spinnaker fleet team championship. We have had excellent racing success and your sails and advice have been an essential part of it.

All the best,

2000 MBYC Spring Regatta - Lake Washington, WA

We started off the 2000 season where we left off, winning the season opener, keeping us undefeated with the (Haarstick) sails here in the Seattle Fleet. I was a little rusty since this is the first race I have done since last Sept in the J-22, this put us in a must win situation for the last 2 races of the regatta but we managed to survive the 35 knot squall on Saturday to win that race by a really big margin and then kept in control of a 3 boat tacking dual for the one Sunday race to win and take the regatta (3-2-1-1).

The other boats used North's, New Quantum and Brand new just out of the box Ullman's, but we could out point and out run them all with our 2.5 year old Haarstick's.

I love these sails!
